Xiaomi Mi4 first impressions: Great hardware, MIUI 6 still needs polish
We got our hands on the Xiaomi Mi4 this week, and the hardware is as impressive as expected. The stainless steel frame and glossy back feel premium, and the 5-inch 1080p display is sharp. Performance from the Snapdragon 801 is buttery smooth.
But MIUI 6, which ships on the device, has a few rough edges. The new flat design is visually refreshing, but some users may find the changes jarring. The notification shade has been revamped, and while it's more functional, it takes time to get used to. Overall, the Mi4 is a strong contender, but the software experience may be a deciding factor.
Huawei Ascend Mate 7 unveiled: 6-inch fingerprint scanner and all-metal body
Huawei took the wraps off the Ascend Mate 7 at IFA 2014, and it's a stunner. The aluminum unibody feels solid, and the 6-inch 1080p display is bright. The standout feature is the rear-mounted fingerprint scanner, which Huawei claims can unlock the phone in under a second.
Powered by Huawei's own Kirin 925 octa-core processor, the Mate 7 promises excellent performance. It also packs a 4100mAh battery, which should easily last a full day. The device runs Emotion UI 3.0 on top of Android 4.4, which includes features like one-hand mode. The Mate 7 is expected to launch in China first, with global availability later.
Meizu MX4 vs Xiaomi Mi4: Clash of the Chinese titans
Two of the most anticipated Chinese flagships this year are the Meizu MX4 and Xiaomi Mi4. Both offer top-tier specs, but they take different approaches. The MX4 has a 5.36-inch display and a MediaTek MT6595 processor, while the Mi4 has a 5-inch display and a Snapdragon 801.
In terms of design, the MX4 has a more rounded body with a aluminum frame, while the Mi4 has a stainless steel frame with a removable back. The MX4's camera is 20.7MP compared to the Mi4's 13MP, but megapixels aren't everything. Software is also a differentiator: Flyme 4 on the MX4 vs MIUI 6 on the Mi4. Both have their loyal fans. Elephone P3000S with 4G LTE and fingerprint sensor goes official
Elephone has officially announced the P3000S, a mid-range smartphone with a standout feature: a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor. This is one of the first devices in its price range to offer biometric security. The P3000S also supports 4G LTE, which is becoming more common in Chinese phones.
The device features a 5-inch 720p display, a quad-core MediaTek MT6732 processor, 1GB of RAM, and 8GB of storage. It runs Android 4.4 KitKat. The fingerprint sensor can be used to unlock the phone and also to secure individual apps. The P3000S is expected to retail for around $150, making it an attractive option for those wanting extra security on a budget.
THL 5000 with 5000mAh battery now available for pre-order
Battery life is a major concern for smartphone users, and THL aims to solve it with the THL 5000. As the name suggests, it packs a massive 5000mAh battery, which should easily provide two days of heavy use. The phone also supports reverse charging, so you can use it to charge other devices.
Under the hood, the THL 5000 runs on a MediaTek MT6592 octa-core processor with 2GB of RAM. It has a 5-inch 1080p display and a 13MP rear camera. The device is now available for pre-order from various online retailers at around $200. If you're tired of constantly plugging in, this could be the phone for you.
